Float down Spiegelrei canal in Bruges, Belgium, and you’ll arrive at the town square called Jan van Eyckplein. Sometimes referred to as the ‘Venice of the North’, Bruges has numerous canals that once fuelled the historic city’s shipping economy. Jan van Eyckplein is named for the influential 15th-century Belgian painter, Jan van Eyck. A statue of him stands in the middle of the square.
