Remembering D-Day. D-Day remembered
During the Second World War, on June 6, 1944, after months of planning and countless delays, Allied forces descended on the beaches in Normandy, France. It marked the start of the Battle of Normandy, one of the most ambitious military attacks in history. Codenamed Operation Overlord, it was an operation to free Western Europe from Nazi occupation. This military action would play a pivotal role in the Allied Powers' win against the Axis.
Today's Normandy is a far cry from the trenches and minefields of war. The region is a beautiful destination, drawing travellers from around the world looking to sample fragrant camembert cheese while feasting their eyes on the lush landscapes that inspired the great impressionist painters. However, blunt physical reminders of the past remain scattered about the region, so it is important that we remember and honour the many lives lost during the D-Day operation.
