Where history flows along the canal. Old Town Hall, Bamberg, Germany
Perched above the Regnitz River, Bamberg's Old Town Hall is one of Germany's most distinctive landmarks. According to local legend, the town's bishop refused to give citizens land for their town hall, so they created their own artificial island in the river by driving wooden piles into the riverbed. The building that rose there became a symbol of civic independence and remains one of Bavaria's most photographed scenes.
The Old Town Hall blends Gothic and Baroque elements, but its colourful exterior holds an even bigger surprise. Elaborate trompe-l'œil frescoes create the illusion of columns, shadows and architectural details, while a mischievous cherub appears to poke a three-dimensional leg through the painted wall. The historic Upper Bridge also passes directly through the building, allowing pedestrians to walk through it as they cross the river.
Inside, the ornate Rococo Hall and the Ludwig Collection of European porcelain add another layer to the landmark's rich cultural story, making the Old Town Hall as fascinating up close as it is from the river.
