Where a lesson changed the world. Guru Purnima

One of the world's most influential teachings was delivered in the open nearly 2,500 years ago, and its legacy still stands in stone. Guru Purnima celebrates spiritual and academic teachers who shape our lives, and few places capture that spirit better than Dhamek Stupa in Sarnath, Uttar Pradesh.

For Buddhists, the festival marks the day Gautama Buddha delivered his first sermon to five disciples after attaining enlightenment. Known as the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta, or 'Turning of the Wheel of Dharma,' it introduced the Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path.

The 43-metre stupa seen today was built around 500 CE over an earlier monument commissioned by Ashoka in 249 BCE. Its lower walls feature intricate Gupta-era carvings of flowers, geometric patterns, birds and human figures, while ancient Brahmi inscriptions still survive. Unlike many stupas, no relic chamber has ever been discovered inside, suggesting it was built as a symbolic marker. Its unfinished upper section is a fitting reminder that the journey of learning is never truly complete.
