Believed to have been a human settlement dating further back than recorded history, Matera, Italy, can seem like a village from another time. In many film and television productions, the town has been used as a location stand-in for biblical-era Jerusalem. The city’s old town region, Sassi di Matera, even retains some of the old cave dwellings that served as the dwellings for those who originally settled the area millennia ago.
