On July 14, Shark Awareness Day asks us to trade movie panic for ocean truth. Sharks have patrolled the seas for more than 420 million years, and as apex predators, they help keep marine ecosystems in balance.

Lemon sharks give birth to live young, and their pups spend years in shallow mangroves, where cover and calm water help them grow. Protecting them safeguards far more than a single species: healthy shark populations support reefs, seagrass beds, and the broader ocean food web.
