These semiconductors make up the kind of microchip that carries out the computing functions of numerous everyday electronics. The name ‘semiconductor’ comes from the material used. In this case, ultrathin sheets of silicon, a semiconducting element, go through a weeks-long process that results in an integrated circuit that will be the ‘brain’ of a computer device.
