Giant kelp forest near San Clemente Island, California
Kelp forests, like terrestrial forests, provide habitats for various marine life. Giant kelp, seen here, thrives along the West Coast of North America and is found along coastlines in South America, Australia and South Africa as well. Individual giant kelp plants can grow as much as two feet per day so when a few plants get hold on the coastline, a forest can spring up quickly. Here off the shore of San Clemente Island, California, snorkellers may join the marine creatures weaving in and out of the thick stalks of giant kelp, enjoying the view of this unique ecosystem.
