One last summer spin. Canadian National Exhibition begins
You arrive while the sky is turning blue-grey, hear the first burst of music from the midway and realise the Canadian National Exhibition has opened for another season. The event began in 1879 as the Toronto Industrial Exhibition, designed to bring together farming, industry and new ideas from across Canada. More than a century later, that purpose still survives in the exhibits and demonstrations spread across the grounds.
A first-time visitor might start with the giant slide, then drift towards the soaring swings, game booths and live performances. The food is part of the tradition too, with poutine, corn dogs, butter tarts and ice cream drawing long queues alongside the CNE's famous over-the-top creations. Look up and you may also catch the Canadian International Air Show, scheduled for September 5-7 over Toronto's waterfront. By evening, thousands of lights flicker on, rides glow against the darkening sky and the whole place hums with late-summer excitement. So, what's your first stop at the CNE this year?
