Glowing from within. Discovery Day in Canada
Discovery Day is an annual holiday in the Yukon commemorating the 1896 discovery of gold at Bonanza Creek that set off the Klondike Gold Rush and led to the formation of the Yukon territory. It attracted thousands of prospectors to the region in search of gold, leading to significant economic and social changes.
Discovery Day serves as an opportunity to celebrate and reflect upon the Yukon's rich heritage, history, and natural resources, just like the beautiful Emerald Lake we see in today's image. It is also a day to honour the spirit of adventure and resilience of those who participated in the Klondike Gold Rush. To commemorate the day, government offices, schools, and many businesses remain closed to allow residents to participate in the festivities. Various events and activities are held throughout the Yukon, including parades, historical reenactments, gold panning competitions, and concerts.
