A bond that endures. Happy Mother's Day!
On Mother's Day, we honour the care, patience and protection that shape lives everywhere. In the wild, these qualities often stand out most where survival is hardest. Captured in Wapusk National Park in northern Manitoba, Canada, today's image shows a polar bear mother and her cubs sharing a playful moment on the Arctic tundra.
For polar bears, motherhood is a long and demanding commitment. Females give birth in winter, sheltering their newborn cubs in snow dens that provide vital insulation. Cubs are born very small and rely entirely on their mother's rich milk for warmth and growth. For more than two years, she raises them alone—guiding their movements, teaching essential survival skills and protecting them from danger. Play helps cubs build strength and coordination before they face life on their own. The scene offers a quiet reminder of the dedication behind motherhood—enduring, protective, and essential—even in one of the world's harshest environments.
