A European crested tit lands on a pine tree in France
You’ll find this bird all over the coniferous and deciduous forests of central and northern Europe, although the population in the UK is largely confined to the ancient Caledonian pine forests and Scots pine plantations. It eats insects and pine seeds and has been known to store food for the winter. Here’s hoping the European crested tit has already begun stockpiling. Today is the winter solstice, which marks the shortest day of the year and official start of winter.
