Common tern with chick
The common tern, a graceful bird species, is known for its slender body, forked tail and striking black cap. These seabirds can be found across Europe, North America and parts of Asia, nesting in colonies along coastlines and freshwater habitats. Agile and swift in flight, common terns plunge-dive into the water to catch small fish, their primary food source. They migrate long distances during winter, making impressive journeys to reach their warmer wintering grounds.
