Lake Schrecksee in Bavaria is one of Germany’s most beautiful alpine lakes. It is surrounded by stunning peaks in the Allgäu mountains, part of the Northern Limestone Alps, just a few hundred metres from the Austrian border. At 1,813 metres above sea level, it is also among the highest alpine lakes in Germany. It can be quite difficult to reach – a hike here will take about six to eight hours – but the views are worth the effort. You can cool off with a swim in the turquoise lake, which has a small island in the middle.
