Quite the night light

Overlooking majestic columnar rock formations and seasonal daffodil fields, the chalk-white shape of Tsumekizaki Lighthouse is striking against a speckled night sky. This beacon built in 1937 warns ships off the rocky Izu Peninsula southwest of Tokyo, guiding them as they pass between the mainland and the Izu Islands. The Izus, a small archipelago home to about 26,000 people, are part of the broader Tokyo Islands group that stretches a thousand miles into the South Pacific.
