When it comes to seaside icons, England's Eastbourne Pier doesn't just make waves—it has been riding them for over 150 years. Opened in 1870, this Victorian marvel in East Sussex has survived tempests, fires and even wars. Stretching gracefully into the English Channel, the pier started life as a docking point for steamers. Over time, it evolved into a place where you can stroll above the water, lose a few coins to an arcade machine and gain a few back in memories.
A severe storm in 1877 swept away the landward half of the pier, which was then rebuilt at a higher level on stilts that allowed it to flex and move slightly during rough weather. During World War II, sections of its decking were removed to mount machine guns for coastal defence. A 2014 fire that damaged part of the structure could have spelt the end. However, it was restored and reopened, bringing back its charm—complete with cafés, shops and the hum of seagulls.
