Misty roads and mountain moods. Malshej Ghat, Maharashtra
If you're craving the thrill of monsoon magic—then Malshej Ghat is calling. Just off the Nagar-Kalyan road, this spot, nestled in the Western Ghats of Maharashtra, is a mountain pass that looks straight out of a dream. With its misty trails, serene lakes, cascading waterfalls and scenic tunnels, it's a haven for nature lovers and trekkers. Its diverse ecosystem bursts with life—leopards, Indian giant squirrels and barking deer roam its dense forests. Birdwatchers especially flock here during the monsoon, when flamingos make their seasonal visit.
But Malshej isn't just about postcard-worthy views—it's steeped in history, too. Once a strategic corridor for the Maratha Empire, the region witnessed the movements of Chhatrapati Shivaji and his forces. Echoes of that era still linger in the nearby forts like Harishchandragad, with their ancient temples, rugged caves and sturdy fortifications. Old trade paths winding through the area hint at its past as a vital link between the Deccan Plateau and the coastal plains, frequented by merchants and travellers.
