Island fox in Channel Islands National Park, California, USA
The Channel Island National Park is home to a unique subspecies called the island fox. These small foxes are found only on the Channel Islands off the coast of California and are the smallest canids in North America. The island foxes have adapted to the island's environment and have developed unique characteristics, such as smaller size, shorter tails, and lighter coats compared to other fox species. Unfortunately, the island foxes were once on the brink of extinction due to human impact, but conservation efforts have managed to stabilise their populations.
