Happy Boxing Day!. Boxing Day
It’s Boxing Day, traditionally a day off to relax after all the Christmas excitement. Some parts of the UK might well have enough snow to spend the day hurtling down a hill, like these sledgers pictured at Beverley Westwood Common, in East Yorkshire. But even in those areas which remain stubbornly snow-free, families will head out for a winter walk to blow away the cobwebs and work up an appetite for some Christmas leftovers.
Why is it called Boxing Day? There are a few theories, but the most widely accepted one is that the name derives from the giving of ‘boxes' (of gifts) to the poor the day after Christmas. Perhaps we should all follow that example today, as we enjoy the time off. How can we give a little Christmas to those who are less fortunate?
