A national historic site. Colourful homes and rocky slopes
Welcome to the historic site of Signal Hill in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador. As the name indicates, Signal Hill played a major role for defense and communications. Long before radio was established, flags were used to signal the arrival of mercantile ships at the harbour. History was made in 1901 when Guglielmo Marconi received transatlantic’s first wireless signal. Today, visitors can experience the Noon Day Gun, which is a 19th century cannon that is fired every single day at noon. Alongside that, there are coastal trails that offer breathtaking views of the Narrows, the Atlantic Ocean and the city of St. John’s.
