Jaipur's breathtaking water palace
Today we take you to the Jal Mahal, one of the most photographed spots of Jaipur city, in Man Sagar lake. When he had the Jal Mahal built, Maharaja Madho Singh never meant for it to be a palace, but a hunting lodge for his entourage during their duck hunting trips. Designed in classic Rajput symmetrical style, the building is made with pink sandstone. At first glance, the palace appears to have just the one floor, as you can’t really see the four floors submerged! The stone walls below hold back millions of litres of water. The innovative lime mortar used to bind the stones together prevents seepage into the building, and it has successfully been doing so for over 250 years!
