The Thames Barrier at London, England
When unusually high tides on the North Sea cause the River Thames to rise, the Thames Barrier keeps the river from flooding London and its outlying suburbs along this portion of the river. The deadly North Sea flood of 1953 prompted the construction of the Thames Barrier.
