Saint-Michel chapel on Lake Serre-Ponçon, Hautes-Alpes, France
Set amongst spectacular scenery in the southern French Alps, Lake Serre-Ponçon, known as ‘Sea in the Mountains’, is one of the largest artificial lakes in Europe. Nestled on a small island in the lake is Saint-Michel chapel, which once stood on the top of a hill above the village and had to be carefully preserved when the dam was built in 1961. The chapel traces back to the 12th century but was destroyed in the 17th century before being rebuilt.
