These ducks in a row are among the many waterfowl who gather here on Lake Tahoe, which even in winter never fully freezes due to its massive depth and volume. Other flocks found on this ample alpine lake: Sailors, swimmers, anglers, and nature lovers of all types. On shore, you'll find hordes of hikers trekking the trails, foodies enjoying fine dining, and gamblers trying their luck at lakeside casinos. And each winter, even set between two warm states (California and Nevada), this elevated area becomes a powdery paradise for skiers, snowboarders, and even snow tubers.
