South Tyrol serenity
At the foot of the mighty Seekofel mountain, a large and deep lake reflects the crags and crannies of the enclosing Dolomites range. Signs of winter whiten the shores of Pragser Wildsee in our image, and this heralds a winding down of the high season here at one of the most beloved vacation spots in all of northern Italy. Sometimes called the 'Pearl of the Alps' for its sheer scenic splendor, the lake and much of its dramatic environs are set within the Fanes-Sennes-Prags Nature Park, a showcase of South Tyrol beauty. As winter arrives, some lakeside paths at Pragser Wildsee may close, and the boats will be stored until spring, but the lake doesn't fall entirely quiet—its frozen surface may host curling competitions.
The wooden boathouse on stilts is a familiar landmark, reflecting the distinct geology of the Dolomites, which earned UNESCO World Heritage status in 2009. These pale, jagged peaks, primarily composed of dolostone, showcase a unique geological evolution with dramatic spires and valleys. This ancient mountain range, spanning several Italian provinces, provides a vital habitat for diverse high-altitude ecosystems.
