Height meets light
Called Sagarmāthā in Nepali and Chomolungma in Tibetan, this mountain's height would make it famous by any name. Of course, Mount Everest's fame has partly turned to notoriety in recent years, as climbers making successful summits have numbered over 800 a season, and images of long lines and garbage-strewn slopes have spread through social media. Though a ban on expeditions during the COVID-19 pandemic gave the mountain a break, many open questions remain about its future as a sustainable mountaineering destination.
