A sunken town's remnant
Above the body of water that engulfed its predecessors, a humble chapel stands watch in the hills. Despite its weathered look, Roselend Chapel has only stood here since Roselend Dam (seen as just a sliver on the right edge of our photo) was completed in the early 1960s. As the basin below filled with water, the abandoned French village of Roselend—including its Romanesque chapel dating to the 12th century—was fully submerged. This backstory is told in brief by the chapel's dual bells: The one on the right is an original from the now-sunken chapel, while the shiny one on the left was cast in 2011 (replacing a second original that was stolen in the 1980s).
