A rebuilt bulwark

A plundered ruin before its recent restoration, Bobolice Castle is one of 25 castles in the defensive network now called the Trail of the Eagle's Nests. Most are thought to have been built in the 14th century under Casimir the Great, who inherited the war-torn Kingdom of Poland and made it a prosperous power. Mostly built on high promontories and slopes, the Eagle's Nests bolstered Poland's mountainous western border against rivals like Bohemia. Bobolice did its part until the Swedes sacked it in 1657, leaving it a half-demolished husk until reconstruction began in 2004.
