Breaking the ice
There's no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothes,' goes an old Scandinavian saying. Our aerial shot of an ice-defying kayaker brings us to a different part of Europe—Bulgaria, to be exact—but the aphorism applies anywhere there's a chill in the air. To a skilled and well-equipped kayaker, any body of water lacking a thick ice layer can offer opportunities for polar paddling—as our photo subject, clad in a dry suit and presumably warm layers beneath, proves by slicing a streak through the Shiroka Polyana reservoir's thin sheet of ice.
