A tide-washed temple

Tanah Lot is one of the seven sea temples of Bali, all built within sight of each other to form a visual 'chain' said to protect the island from evil. Fringed by wave-carved cliffs and caverns, it's only accessible when the tide dips low, but its tricky location hasn't kept it from becoming one of the most visited tourist sites in all of Indonesia. Only members of the Balinese Hindu community are allowed to ascend to the temple itself, but visitors can admire it from below as they wander among the tide pools.
