The idea of watching a film from the comfort of your car dates back to 1915. But the first true drive-in opened this day in 1933. Our photo depicts the Fly-in Drive-in Theatre in Wall Township, New Jersey, United States, which opened in 1948. And, as the name implies, this theatre welcomed aeroplanes as well as cars. Drive-in film theatres were a growing trend at the time, so the owners of this spot took advantage of the nearby airstrip and added room for 15 small planes to taxi in and watch the show. That would make for an impressive first date even today.
