Pause, breathe and stretch. International Day of Yoga
There's something enduring about the calm that settles in when you roll out a yoga mat and take that first deep breath. With its roots in ancient India, yoga has long been a go-to for finding balance—both in body and mind. And it's not just a personal practice anymore. In 2014, the United Nations decided it was worth honouring globally, officially marking 21 June as the International Day of Yoga, a global nod to this age-old path to wellness.
One of the places where the spirit of yoga comes alive in every corner is Rishikesh in Uttarakhand, often called the 'Yoga Capital of the World.' Among the city's many landmarks is Lakshman Jhula, once the crossing for locals, pilgrims and selfie-takers alike. This suspension bridge stretches across the Ganges, blending natural beauty with spiritual energy. It connected the villages of Tapovan and Jonk—two sides of the river in two different districts. Built during the days of the East India Company, it carried everything from quiet footsteps to the occasional revving motorbike. Although the bridge has been closed since 2020, its charm hasn't faded one bit.
