The city was the last capital of the renowned Vijayanagara empire, and its affluent rulers constructed magnificent temples and palaces here during the 14th and 16th centuries. The region is marked by the presence of the Tungabhadra River, expansive plains and rugged hill ranges including Matanga hill. The complexity and advancement of Hampi's diverse urban, royal and religious structures are showcased in over 1600 well-preserved remnants.
