Legends of Nalanda. Bihar Day

Bihar Day, or Bihar Diwas, is a celebration of a state with a deep-rooted history. Observed on March 22, it marks the day in 1912 when Bihar and Orissa were separated from the Bengal Province under British rule. Today, this state is surrounded by Uttar Pradesh to the west, Nepal to the north, the northern region of West Bengal to the east and Jharkhand to the south. The mighty Ganga cuts through the region, flowing from west to east.

Bihar, the third-most populous state in India, is a treasure trove of history and heritage, drawing visitors from across the globe. Among its many cultural gems, it boasts two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the famed Nalanda mahavihara, one of the world's oldest universities—featured in today's image. This ancient Buddhist centre of learning houses archaeological remains from the 3rd century BCE to the 13th century CE. These include stupas, shrines, viharas (monastic and educational complexes) and exquisite artworks in stucco, stone and metal. Recognised as the Indian subcontinent's oldest university, the ruins of Nalanda continue to be a symbol of intellectual legacy.
