Lighting up Burghausen. Burghausen, Bavaria, Germany
Welcome to the German town of Burghausen, home to the longest castle complex in the world. Stretching over half a mile in length, Burghausen Castle towers on a ridge above the old town on the banks of the Salzach river, on Bavaria’s border with Austria. Boasting battlements, towers, chapels and six courtyards, the castle was founded before 1025 and the main part, on the left of the photograph, is the oldest. It has been extended, fortified and modernised many times over the centuries, played host to generations of Bavarian dukes and counts and borne witness to 1,000 years of history.
