Celebrating fabulous fungus
The humble mushroom may grow in some dark, hidden places but come October, it gets its time in the sun. UK Fungus Day is celebrated at the start of the month although this year’s activities will take place online on 3 and 4 October, due to the coronavirus pandemic. It’s as good a time as any to promote everything fabulous fungi have to offer - especially the nutritional benefits. Mushrooms have long been associated with good health. Early Romans referred to them as the food of the gods and hieroglyphics suggest that ancient Egyptians linked the mushroom to immortality. In modern times, we’ve learned that mushrooms are a powerful source of vitamins and antioxidants. Which type of mushroom is your favourite?
