Rainbow over the Red Hills

Welcome to Glamaig, the northernmost of the Isle of Skye’s Red Hills, or Red Cuillin, part of the wider Cuillin mountain range dominating the landscape here. A huge range of climbing peaks await the adventurous here on this small but beautiful island off mainland Scotland’s west coast. The conical Glamaig, the site of a famously tough hill race, towers 2,543ft over Glen Sligachan, which separates the rounder, granite Red Hills from the dark jagged peaks of the Black Cuillin. The latter’s famous 11km long ridge, over 3,000ft high in places, offers the UK’s most challenging mountain terrain.

These mountains have been attracting climbers and walkers for over 150 years but some are not for the faint hearted. The Black Cuillin in particular are for experienced climbers only and all those who set out are warned to make sure they are well equipped – as the weather can change quickly. But those who make it to the top will be rewarded (on a clear day) with stunning views over Skye and out to sea.
