A lot of work goes into taking great photos, as this Emperor penguin can attest. The best photographers find the right location, know their equipment and are ready when the magic happens. Of course, it helps to recognise an unusual shot when one wanders into view, such as curious Emperor penguins inviting themselves to your shoot in Antarctica.

There’s no better time to practise all those skills than World Photography Day, which could be considered the anniversary of photography. On 19 August 1839, the French government bought the patent for the recently invented daguerreotype photographic process, named after French inventor Louis Daguerre, and offered the invention and instructions as a gift “free to the world”. Merci!
