Gare do Oriente in Lisbon, Portugal
A major new train station in Lisbon, Portugal, was first proposed in 1994. And just in time for Expo ’98, the Gare do Oriente (Lisbon Oriente Station) was finally complete. Designed by the famed Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, the station features sweeping arches influenced by Gothic architecture. Aside from its main function as a rail hub, the station itself links directly to a commercial shopping complex. How convenient!
