Hobbit house at Hobbiton Movie Set, Matamata, New Zealand
A round door, a bright green frame and a hillside that looks straight out of Middle-earth—welcome to Hobbiton Movie Set in Matamata, New Zealand. Built in 1999 for 'The Lord of the Rings,' the original set featured 39 temporary Hobbit Holes across a 4.9-hectare site. After filming ended, the set was dismantled, but it returned in 2009 for 'The Hobbit' films and was rebuilt as a permanent attraction.
The Hobbit house pictured here is one of the detailed Hobbit Holes that bring the Shire to life. Each one was designed with its own character, from colourful gardens and tiny pathways to distinctive round doors. Bag End, the home of Bilbo and Frodo Baggins, sits above the Party Tree and is among the set's best-known spots. Today, Hobbiton has 44 permanent Hobbit Holes, and visitors can step inside a recreated Hobbit home on Bagshot Row. One thing is certain: Middle-earth has never looked quite so inviting.
