Plains under pressure. Thunderstorm above the plains, Bulgaria
Located on the eastern Balkan Peninsula, Bulgaria sits at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, where ancient cultures, fertile landscapes and shifting climates converge.
Under dramatic skies, Bulgaria's two great plains reveal the country's agricultural heart. The Danubian Plain spreads across the north, a rolling landscape of fields and river valleys shaped by a temperate continental climate, where warm summers often fuel powerful thunderstorms. Farther south lies the Upper Thracian Plain, lower and warmer, influenced by continental systems and Mediterranean air masses flowing inward from the Aegean region. Here, hot summers and moisture from the Maritsa River basin combine to make the region especially prone to intense summer storms—like the one unfolding above the plains in this image.
Together, these plains anchor Bulgaria's food production and reflect a land where weather, geography and human history remain closely linked.
