At first glance, there's no doubt that the interior of Radio City Music Hall pulls you in and cranks up the excitement. It feels like stepping straight into the sun in the middle of New York City—an Art Deco fever dream of how the 1930s imagined the future. This rush of awe is celebrated every March 27 as World Theatre Day.
When Radio City opened in 1932, in the middle of the Great Depression, it wasn't built to be modest. It was meant to dazzle. With nearly 6,000 seats, glowing arches and a stage designed for jaw-dropping spectacle, it became a home for entertainment on a massive scale. The Rockettes turned precision dance into a pop culture icon right here, kicking theatre arts into the mainstream.
