Seamlessly connected. Maharashtra Day
Maharashtra Day is a tribute to the rich heritage and remarkable journey of one of India's most populous states. Celebrated on May 1, it marks the creation of Maharashtra in 1960, uniting Marathi-speaking people under one state. The day is filled with parades, speeches and events that honour the state's legacy while embracing its modern achievements.
One such symbol of Maharashtra's progress rises above the Arabian Sea—the iconic Bandra-Worli Sea Link. Officially named the Rajiv Gandhi Sea Link, this is an 8-lane cable-stayed bridge. It is a 5.6-kilometre-long engineering marvel connecting Bandra to South Mumbai. The bridge initially opened to the public with four lanes on June 30, 2009, while all eight lanes became fully operational by March 24, 2010. By providing a faster alternative to the congested roads, the sea link cuts down peak-hour travel time between Bandra and Worli from 20–30 minutes to just 10 minutes, making commutes significantly smoother. As vehicles glide over its expanse, the bridge connects dreams, ambition and the unstoppable spirit of the state.
