Today we celebrate World Pizza Day, an important anniversary for pizza lovers around the world. That's why we are in Naples, the home of pizza. Although similar dishes existed in ancient times, the modern pizza has its roots in the heart of the capital of Campania, the city that gave birth to this dish in the 18th century, when tomatoes imported from America were combined with bread. Created in 1889 in honour of Queen Margherita of Savoy, the Pizza Margherita, with its ingredients reminiscent of the Italian flag—red tomatoes, white mozzarella and green basil—became a symbol of Italian conviviality, culture and tradition.
Already at the beginning of the 20th century, Neapolitan pizza makers celebrated this day in honour of Saint Anthony Abbot, protector of animals, firemen and bakers. More than a hundred years later, the art of the Neapolitan pizza maker was recognised by UNESCO as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Today we celebrate by eating pizza, a symbol of Italy, and rediscovering its history and culture. Which is your favourite? Margherita, Marinara or something else? Let's enjoy a pizza and let ourselves be carried away by the taste and the joy of a shared moment.
