The beauty of intricate carvings. Czech Republic, Prague
St. George’s Basilica is a magnificent church in Prague and the oldest surviving church in the city. It was consecrated in 921 A.D. by Vrastislaus I, the Duke of Bohemia. The interior is made of sandstone and is elaborately decorated with sculptures and reliefs. The sculptures depict various biblical scenes, such as Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden and the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. There are also several reliefs depicting saints and apostles.
The portal is one of the best examples of Romanesque sculpture in central Europe and is a popular tourist attraction in Prague. It is also significant in the history of Czech art, as it represents the first known use of the 'Prague style' of sculpture, which later became a dominant form of art in the region.
