Barn owls, distinguished by their white heart-shaped faces, are one of the world’s most widespread birds. In fact, you can find them on every continent except Antarctica. Their habitat consists of woodlands, farms, and cliffs, but barn owls also enjoy roosting in places like bell towers and barns. They are nighttime predators that fly over open lands to hunt rats and mice. However, during heavy rains, these nocturnal birds are unable to hunt because their feathers aren’t waterproof. Sadly, this means they are prone to starvation during prolonged periods of inclement weather. Although there are superstitions about their hoarse cries and almost ghostly appearance, some cultures view barn owls as a good omen.
