Alpine grandeur. Chiemgau Alps, Aschau im Chiemgau
Winter has well and truly arrived on the summit of the Kampenwand mountain, in the German state of Bavaria. This 5,476ft (1,669m) peak sits in the Chiemgau Alps, a mountain range in the Eastern Alps, and is about an hour’s drive from Munich. Busy with hikers, mountain bikers, hang gliders and paragliders during the warmer months, the cold weather brings with it some peace and quiet – although you still get snowshoe hikers and cross-country skiers here.
Panoramic views await those who scale the Kampenwand. To the north stretch the foothills of the Alps and the huge freshwater lake, Chiemsee, known as the ‘Bavarian Sea’. To the south, as seen in our homepage image, you get a fabulous view of the Bavarian and Austrian mountains.
