The stair-step moss is widely distributed across boreal forests typically in the Northern Hemisphere. They tend to grow on dead logs and ledges. The age of this plant can be determined based on the level of steps it has. In the Arctic Tundra, the plant is generally smaller with less steps compared to the southern region, where the plant is larger with more steps.
