Info. Ålesund, Norway
The pretty town of Ålesund is tucked between the mountains and fjords in the western part of Norway. The seaport is built on a row of islands stretching out into the Atlantic Ocean and is known for its charming Art Nouveau architecture. Most buildings were constructed in this style between 1904 and 1907 after a devastating fire destroyed the centre and burned down about 850 houses. In ordinary years, Ålesund attracts plenty of tourists and serves as a gateway for visitors to explore the bird island of Runde as well as Geirangerfjord, one of Norway's most beautiful fjords and a UNESCO World Heritage site.
