The origins of Schwetzingen Palace, located in the German state of Baden-Württemberg, trace back to 1350 when a small moated castle occupied the site. Schwetzingen flourished in the 18th century under Charles Theodore, Elector of Bavaria, who instructed leading landscape architects to design the gardens for the palace, which intertwine French and English styles. The central part of the magnificent gardens, pictured here, features a circular parterre laid out in a symmetrical pattern.
